An IoT-powered smart bin engineered for elderly and disabled users — fully mobile, remotely controlled via a web application, with automatic lid, obstacle avoidance, and fullness alerts built in.
The Challenge
Elderly and disabled individuals face a daily friction most people never notice: the physical effort of approaching a fixed trash bin. For those with limited mobility, this seemingly minor task creates genuine dependency on caregivers. No existing smart bin addressed this — they all add features but none of them move.
Our Solution
We built RepoBin around an Arduino Uno + ESP32 stack with Wi-Fi, giving users full directional control from any browser. An HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor handles obstacle detection in real time. A motion-activated servo lid opens hands-free when approached. A graduated audio alert system notifies users before the bin reaches capacity.
The Outcome
Prototype validated with 40 survey participants and 10 beta users from the target demographic. Demonstrated at the PRiDE INnovation Showcase (UiTM Terengganu) where RepoBin was awarded 2nd Runner Up — Best Commercialization Idea, recognised for its market viability and assistive technology value.
